Radiofrequency thermoablation is an alternative to surgery to treat:

  1. Recurrences of thyroid cancer.

  2. Lymph node metastases in elderly patients.

  3. Patients refusing surgery.

  4. Recurrences of thyroid cancer or lymph node metastases.

  5. Surgery is the standard treatment for primary thyroid cancer.

Therefore the indications for RFA for primary thyroid cancer have not yet been clearly established, however in patients with primary (papillary) thyroid cancer who refuse surgery or cannot benefit from surgery, thermal ablations can be considered.
